Holding Time

2019

Mali’s sculptural works predominantly investigate the connection between ceramic processes and the maker’s state of mind. Mali’s work is the materialisation of feelings and emotions that mimic nature’s time keeping, dendrochronology and strata that archive past events, environments and experiences.

Holding Time, is a selection of hand-built sculptures that preserve time through the methodical and meditative layering invocative of archaic Australian landscapes. The coils are repetitively stacked in a process of making that is a balanced arrangement of artist knowledge and skill. For the artist, the slow methodical and meditative making process silences frenetic city life resulting in free-form structures that evolve and reveal themselves.

Mali continues to experiment with the realisation and formation of emotions and the concept of time through her ceramic practice. She is conscious that her art will outlive her and that just as ceramics are fragile, so are we all.
